QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Why did construction start during the height of our tourist and holiday season?

When FDOT manages a project, they are constrained by the state procurement process, which does not recognize outside forces like “season”. The project is paid for by the Broward MPO and managed by FDOT, so the City has relatively little say in the timing of the construction. The design took about two years, and finished in early 2018. Then project went out to bid, and was granted to the contractor Roadway Construction. The contractor has X number of days to mobilize. Once construction has started, they have 364 days to finish. So the project must be done by August 8, 2019.  But the contractor is moving quickly, so there is a possibility the roadway portion of the project will be complete sooner.

The WDID Board and City Commission advocated for careful timing at every opportunity during the pre-construction process. Many worked for years to find ways to make Wilton Drive safer and to slow cars down. Then the City got lucky, and was able to join in the project already planned for Fort Lauderdale.  So sooner started, soonest finished.
