The Wilton Drive Landscape Project

Summer 2022 Update

The City contracted with Green Construction Technologies (GCT) to repair and improve the irrigation system on Wilton Drive, prior to the installation of landscaping. The upgrade of the irrigation system is in process, so you may see GCT at work along The Drive. They are also excavating the sidewalk medians and preparing the soil for the planting of about 60 trees. The project should be complete by the end of September. We are all looking forward to the new and improved Wilton Drive!
Safety
As you know, Wilton Drive is a state road, so the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has jurisdiction over almost all matters. The WDID Board has ongoing conversations with FDOT on numerous occasions to advocate for:
Additional Lighting
We understand that we have about 15 additional light fixtures that need to be installed to bring our light level to an acceptable and safe level for pedestrians. Timing has not been confirmed yet.
Crosswalks
We expected, based on previous discussions, that a new cross walk at NE 7th Ave, would be installed by now. We continue to press FDOT to complete their promise. An additional crosswalk farther south is also being considered.
Increased Parking
We have not heard back from FDOT regarding the creation of a “reverse diagonal” pilot project in front of Belle Isle, but it is an idea that even FDOT has acknowledged as something to consider to bring additional parking to the drive where we need it the most.
Stay tuned for the official opening celebration!

Our goal is to transform The Drive into an even more vibrant destination that will attract local, national and international visitors.

Businesses and individuals can donate and support the beautification of The Drive while promoting a positive environmental impact in our city’s center. Did you know a shade tree can significantly cool down a sidewalk while providing thousands of pounds of oxygen a year? We hope you consider making a donation to the Wilton Drive Beautification Project. Any amount is greatly appreciated and your name will be added to our Donor List on our website.

HOW TO DONATE
